The Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Sierra Leone have expanded the existing partnership between both West African institutions of learning.
This was disclosed in a statement on Friday on X (formerly Twitter) after the officials of the University of Sierra Leone paid a visit to their counterparts at LASU.
“The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adenike Boyo, on Thursday received in audience, a representative of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone and Dean of the Institution’s School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Fraizer Williams, at the VC’s Conference Room, 6th floor of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, Main Campus, Ojo,” LASU wrote.
According to the statement, Prof. Williams was at the university to expand an existing partnership between LASU and the University of Sierra Leone.
It added that this is by seeking other areas of collaboration between the institutions, especially in staff exchange and knowledge sharing.
Williams revealed that following the civil war suffered by the diamond-rich West African country in the late 1990s and early 2000s, his institution was yet to recover from the depletion of human capital that was the aftermath of the war.
He stated that the University of Sierra Leone therefore sought support from LASU to bolster their teaching ranks.
Director, Centre for General Nigerian Studies at LASU, Prof. M.O.B Mohammed, who facilitated the collaboration, informed the Acting VC and members of the university management that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed between the universities was already yielding fruits.
Mohammed pointed out that three professors from LASU are currently supervising projects at the Sierra Leonean University formally known as Fourah Bay College.
The Acting VC, in her remarks, expressed LASU’s readiness to build on the existing partnership by providing all the assistance required to bolster the personnel of the visiting institution as requested by Prof. Williams.
Boyo also expressed the desire to welcome students from the University of Sierra Leone to LASU.
Members of the university management and the dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Ibrahim Olateju, who was also at the meeting were unanimous in assuring the visiting professor that the engagement would lead to positive outcomes for the institutions.
