Four memorials commemorating the Tutsi genocide in Rwanda, during which at least 800,000 people were exterminated, became UNESCO world heritage sites on Wednesday, the UN organization announced. “New inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Genocide memorial sites: Nyamata, Murambi, Gisozi and Bisesero”, indicated UNESCO on X (ex-Twitter). Kenya has signed an agreement with Ethiopia to build a 3,000km standard gauge railway network between its newly completed Lamu Port and Addis Ababa, the East Africannews site reports.Work on Lapsset, which stands for the “Lamu–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport Corridor Project”, is expected to begin in 2025. The plan is to build a high-speed electric railway from Lamu to the town of Isiolo, about 200km northeast of Nairobi. DAR ES SALAAM, July 23 (Xinhua) — At least 1,200 delegates will attend the Africa Human Capital Heads of State Summit slated for July 25-26 in Tanzania’s port city of Dar es Salaam, an official said on Sunday. The Department of Tourism has published its latest tourism data for the first quarter of 2023, showing a 102.5% increase in the number of international arrivals in the country compared to the same period in 2022. According to minister Patricia De Lille there were a total of 2.1 million visitors to the country – however, this must still be taken in context of the Covid-19 pandemic and the national and international lockdowns which decimated travel. Johannesburg – The new executive mayor of the City of Joburg, Kabelo Gwamanda, has threatened to sue the former mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Phalatse, for defamation of character. This comes after the circulation of voice notes that are believed to be from members of an investment scheme that Gwamanda allegedly used to run. In the voice notes, a woman complains that Gwamanda had scammed her and other people who had invested in a company called Ithemba Lama Afrika. UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres has warned of the escalation of the crisis in Sudan with more people being displaced internally because of the intensifying war. Guterres said they were now co-ordinating efforts to take out people who want to leave Sudan into neighbouring countries. Already thousands of people have left Sudan for Egypt, Chad, South Sudan, Ethiopia and other neighbouring states.
