Tunisia emerged triumphant with a 3-0 win against Botswana in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match on Thursday night.
The Group J encounter, which took place at the Stade Hammadi Agrebi, saw Botswana withstand early Tunisian pressure, holding the hosts scoreless in the first half. However, Tunisia broke through just after the hour mark with an own goal by Botswana’s Alford Velaphi.
Tunisia extended their lead to 2-0 in the 82nd minute through substitute Youssef Msakni. Msakni netted his second in stoppage time to complete Tunisia’s emphatic victory. The result saw Tunisia top Group J, having already secured qualification to next year’s AFCON finals in Ivory Coast.
Meanwhile, Botswana finished third in the group, missing out on booking a spot. There was to be no miracles for the visitors as Tunisia controlled proceedings from the outset. When Botswana’s defence buckled under the pressure, conceding three second half goals, their race for a place in AFCON was over.
Tunisia’s triumph wraps up a successful qualifying campaign for the Carthage Eagles, who will now turn focus to the AFCON itself. In contrast, Botswana end their campaign in disappointment, having failed to reach the continental showpiece.
